George Gutierrez successfully completes first national championship campaign – Press Release
South Australian Toyota 86 Racing Series rookie George Gutierrez has successfully completed his first full national level campaign up in Newcastle.
The 22-year-old from Adelaide’s North Eastern suburbs finished the year with an 8th place finish in the final race as well as finishing just outside the top ten in the championship, in what was his first attempt at a complete national level circuit racing championship, in a highly competitive 32 car field.
It took a little time for Gutierrez to get to grips with Newcastle’s tricky tight street circuit layout, qualifying 15th. He was then caught out in the first race while making a pass on a fellow competitor to find another car parked in the fence ahead of him around one of the many blind corners on the circuit. The incident resulted in Gutierrez failing to finish the first race (DNF).
Gutierrez then fought back in the second and third races earning a 15th and then an 8th to wrap up the round and the year in the Toyota 86 Racing Series.
“A costly error in qualifying put us mid-pack which stuck us right in the mix of things,” said Gutierrez after the weekend.
“Unfortunately, in the first race, due too the nature of these street circuits, I committed to a pass but shortly after got caught out by a parked car in the fence.”
“But what an end to the year! Honestly couldn’t have asked for a better result this weekend after our DNF in Race 1. To Finish 8th in Race 3 after starting 30th in Race 2 is absolutely mega.”
“The short narrow concert jungle made it extremely difficult to pass but, I was patient and took advantage of any opportunity I got.”
Gutierrez is proud of what he and his family run team have been able to achieve in their debut season. Four DNF’s after being caught up in other drivers incidents throughout the year put a dent in the young driver’s championship ambitions, where a sixth-place championship result was certainly on the cards.
Rounding out the year for South Australian, he was also awarded by Toyota Australia the “Best use of Social Media” award at the end of season presentation night.
“I am extremely honoured to be recognised by the leading group of Toyota Australia.” said Gutierrez.
“This award goes out to the team at Digital Marketing Tribe, we have been working closely together trying to achieve the absolute maximum for our sponsors which has been recognised by this award. They are best in the business and I can’t thank them enough.”
“That concludes our first effort at a National Circuit racing Championship. This is a huge achievement for us and we honestly can’t thank all those involved that made this happen. I can’t wait for the 2019 season to start already!”
Gutierrez will make an announcement about his 2019 plans ahead of the start of the new season.
George would like once again to thank all his sponsors for their continued support.
