George Gutierrez takes first SuperUtes win
Continuing the strong form shown at the season opener in Tasmania, Gutierrez and his small family operation put in another solid performance in the second round of the series in Western Australia, highlighted by taking the win in the second race of the weekend.
“We won our first national circuit race!” exclaimed Gutierrez after the weekend.
“It feels like it’s been a long time coming but in reality, this is only my third full year of national racing.”
“It’s really a terrific feeling to win for the first time. It’s a fantastic reward for all our hard work over the previous years.”
“We’ve proven now that we can do it and the monkey is off our back now! We’re excited to race for more victories in the future.”
The weekend started off well for Gutierrez, setting the fourth-fastest time in qualifying and securing a second row start in his first visit to the circuit.
A stall at the start of Race 1 wasn’t ideal for the South Australian driver, which saw him drop down to 12th at the end of the first lap. However, a spirited drive saw the 25-year-old make his way back up to fifth at the flag.
Gutierrez’s solid pace saw him dominate the second race, taking the win by 6s over his rivals.
The round wasn’t without issues for the South Australian however. Track debris, most likely a stray bolt or rock, pierced the radiator of Gutierrez’s Holden Colorado in the third race which saw him drop out of contention while in the hunt for another podium result. The damage then ruled him out of the fourth and final encounter of the weekend.
“We’re happy with our efforts in Perth considering we had not turned a lap here before.” recounted Gutierrez.
“Race 1, I made it harder than it needed to be when I stalled at the start. But I worked my way back through the field to finish fifth.”
“In that third race, a rock or bolt pieced our radiator and has most likely damaged our motor, which is why we didn’t make the start of Race 4. Ahhh motorsport, how cruel you can be sometimes.”
“We were so close to bringing home some silverware for the round.”
“I’m extremely proud of my team, although it didn’t go our way on Sunday. Nobody can take away our first win! That win will be forever in our memories. But it won’t be the last one!”
“We’ve now got just 3 weeks until the next round at Winton, so it’s going to be a very tight turnaround to get the Go Sunny Solar Ute ready. But I have faith in my team.”
The V8 SuperUtes Series will head to regional Victoria for the third round of the series at Winton Motor Raceway, just outside of Benalla.
George would like to thank all of his supporters especially Go Sunny Solar, JC Energy, So Cloudy, Get Displays and Delta Crash Repairs.
