We kicked off our Virgin Australia Supercars season by covering the Dunlop Tyre Test Day at Sydney Motorsport Park this week.

Covering test days, particularly a preseason test day like this one, is dramatically different to covering a race meeting. Instead of capturing action and art, a lot of the day was focused on building up a good collection of stock imagery for the magazines and media outlets we supply.

It was also a good opportunity to spend a bit of time in the teams garages. Again with a focus on building up our stock imagery of drivers jumping in and out of cars and teams discussing and working on the cars. All of those behind the scenes style images that we normally wouldn’t get a chance to capture without sacrificing a on-track session at race meeting.

A very calculated and clinical approach to Supercars photography so that we can focus on the action when we get to Clipsal 500 next week. We’ll have much better selection of action and arty shots when the Supercars return to Sydney Motorsport Park in August.

Here’s a sampling of Rhys Vandersyde’s photography work during the Supercars Test Day at Sydney Motorsport Park. Keep an eye on the leading motorsport publications for more images from the test day over the next few weeks.
