Promising SuperUtes debut for George Gutierrez
While the South Australian racer didn’t head weekend with any expectations, glimpses of pace amongst some teething issues left Gutierrez looking forward to the rest of the season.
After completing the change over to the new V8 engine to his recently purchased Holden Colorado in-house in the lead up to the opening round of the series. The first event was more of a shakedown for the family-run Adelaide-based team.
“What an eventful debut! Nothing quite like trying to learn a new race car in the wet,” said Gutierrez.
“We came into this race weekend with absolutely no idea how we would go. No laps, no nothing. We only finished building the car at midnight Wednesday.”
“Although we had a couple of mechanical problems, as did most teams over the weekend, we showed a small glimpse of what is to come.”
“And, on a side note. How good are the flames?”
Limited running in practice and mixed conditions throughout the weekend kept Gutierrez and his team on their toes at The Bend.
“We only managed to complete one lap in qualifying due to a fuel pump issue, which saw us start near the back of the grid for Race 1.” Gutierrez continued.
“But we sorted that out and gained some spots during the race, despite a spin on the wet track, to cross the line in sixth at the end of the first race.”
“That gave us pole position for the second race of the weekend. It was good to mix it with the weekend’s race winners at the start of the second race.”
“A clutch drama midway through the race saw us drop out of the fight for the lead, but we still managed to finish fifth.”
“The third race we had a few more issues and didn’t finish it, but it was good to get some laps under my belt and learn the new SuperUtes.”
Gutierrez and his team are now working tirelessly to resolve the issues that presented themselves over the weekend in preparation for the next round of the series at Winton Motor Raceway in regional Victoria in three weeks time.
“With the limited amount of laps behind the wheel of the car I am excited to see what we are able to do at Winton in a few weeks time,” said Gutierrez.
“I don’t think we will get any test days in prior with the short turn around, but we will get on top of the teething issues to ensure we are able to maximise track time then.”
“A huge thank you to Go Sunny Solar for their support over the weekend. It was fantastic to have their staff attend the track on Sunday and express their support.”
“I can’t wait to get behind the wheel again. This is a new category and is still in its early stages of development. But with more cars on the way, it will only get better.”
Round 2 of the Haltech V8 SuperUtes Series will take place at Winton Motor Raceway on 29-30 May 2021.
